Sales Tip of the Week: Don't Overlook PR Opportunities

Every month you should be spending a small amount of your time furthering your public relations (PR) visibility in your service area. Always coordinate with and involve your Center Director in all of these activities.

Here are a few tips to capitalize on PR:
    1) Use your external newsletter to create interest and PR in the communities. Once you create your list of media, senior centers, community centers, etc. you can easily distribute your newsletters each month.

    2) Don't overlook the other communities in your service area - sometimes the smaller ones are the easiest.

    3) Review all of the media available in your community.

    4) Maintain a list of contacts to send out every press release.

    5) Do not send press releases that are not interesting. In other words make sure there is a valid reason for the release. Make sure it's newsworthy. Always call to make sure your contacts received the release.

    6) August is the month that your US Congress person is home and in their district. Invite them to accompany your staff on a home visit and then invite the media. Medicare is a hot topic in Washington, D. C. and this can be a good way to get the media's attention. When you are coordinating the press releases, work with the Congressperson's office to issue joint releases. They will want to maximize media coverage (they are politicians after all) and will work with you to get the best coverage.

    7) Submit your articles to the print media on a regular basis. Keep after them, you never know when they will need a story and print your article.

    8) Look for human interest stories that you can submit to the local media. Something that one or more of your staff have done to impact the community.
